The Business of Freelance Grant Writing Course
Do meaningful work. Build a meaningful business.
It starts with a spark—the desire to do meaningful work on your own terms. This course helps you turn your grant writing skills into a purposeful business, built with intention, clarity, and long-term sustainability.
-
This course is for experienced grant writers, graduates of our Certificate in Grant Writing program, and professional writers ready to move into grant work. It does not teach you how to write grants. Instead, it teaches you how to launch or grow your own freelance grant writing consulting business. You finish with the real foundation of a practice, including a business plan, fee schedule, list of services, contract, and consultant resume. If you already know the craft and now want the business behind it, you are in the right place. Learn More
-
The Business of Freelance Grant Writing is a self-paced online program built for professionals who need flexibility in their schedule. The course lives in our private Circle community, your home base for all lessons, assignments, and conversation, so everything stays in one place.
Across nine modules you will find video lessons, downloadable templates, and guided exercises that you apply directly to your own business. You will also take part in two kinds of discussion: peer review on each of your core deliverables, and Sticky Situation conversations where we work through the real ethical and judgment calls of freelance consulting. Optional co-working sessions give you real-time momentum and accountability alongside fellow students. Learn More
-
You can start anytime. The course is fully self-paced, so you get immediate access to all nine modules the moment you enroll.
Plan on a minimum of 21 hours of total learning time. Most students spread the work across several weeks, moving quickly some weeks and easing off when life gets full. You set the pace.
Once you enroll, you can move through the modules at your own pace and revisit the lessons and materials as you build your business. Learn More
-
The course walks you step by step through building a real, sustainable freelance consulting business, from setting up your foundation to managing long-term client relationships. Across nine modules, you will learn how to:
Build a 30/60/90-day plan that takes you from idea to launched practice
Research the market and set rates you can present with confidence
Define and describe the services you offer
Create a contract that protects both you and your clients
Market yourself with a consultant resume, website, and LinkedIn presence
Manage multiple clients, deadlines, and the financial side of your practice
The best part: these are not practice exercises. You finish with the actual documents your business runs on, including a business plan, fee schedule, list of services, contract, and consultant resume, ready to put to work. Learn More
-
Yes. When you complete all nine modules and submit your core deliverables, you earn the Spark the Fire Certificate of Completion in the Business of Freelance Grant Writing, along with a digital badge you can display on your LinkedIn profile, résumé, or website.
To earn it, you complete every lesson, submit your six core deliverables, and take part in peer review by responding to at least one fellow student for each deliverable.
This course does not offer a professional credential like our Certificate in Grant Writing. What it gives you is practical, business-focused training, and the real documents to build a sustainable freelance practice. Learn More

Meet Your Instructor
Allison Welch, M.Ed., GPC, has spent more than 25 years on every side of the grant table: as a writer crafting the asks, as a trainer teaching others to do the same, and as a reviewer deciding which proposals get funded. That last role is the one that sets her apart. When you learn from Allison, you're learning from someone who has actually sat with the scoring rubric and watched what separates a funded proposal from a near miss. She's the founder of Spark the Fire Grant Writing and one of approximately 30 GPA-approved trainers in the country.
She built this course on a simple conviction: writing grants well is only half of a freelance career, and the business side is the half that trips most people up. Allison has built her own grant writing practice from the ground up, so she teaches from experience, not theory: how to find clients, set fees that respect your time, scope projects, and run a practice that lasts. In this course she hands you the systems and the candor it takes to turn your skills into a business you can actually sustain.
Allison is also a columnist for Candid, an adjunct professor at several colleges, and the author of the forthcoming book The “Of Course” Factor: A Guide to Meaningful Grant Writing (October 2026). Her teaching is warm, candid, and refreshingly free of hustle. She's far more interested in helping you do meaningful work well than in selling you shortcuts.
