Learning Cohort Versus Self-Paced Courses

The Certificate in Grantwriting course can be taken as a self-paced course or with a learning cohort.  What is a learning cohort, and what course is best for me?

Cohort-Based Learning

A learning cohort allows you to join a small group of like-minded professionals who will go through the course together. The course is presented in eight weeks. Each week, the cohort meets via Zoom for in-depth discussions about the course topics.

Inside the online portion of the course, You and your classmates complete the same assignments that are due on the same dates. You’ll read your peers’ discussion posts and peer review each other’s writing. You’ll also receive weekly individualized feedback on your writing from your professor. After eight weeks, you have one more week to finalize your grant proposal and submit your final draft.

Self-Paced

If your schedule does not permit weekly Zoom meetings, or if you simply prefer to work alone, the self-paced course is for you. You will work one-on-one with your professor and receive individualized feedback on your writing each time to submit a new draft. You will still be able to interact with peers through the online course and engage in peer review, but not everyone is in the same module as you are, so there is less interaction.

benefits of Cohort Learning

  • Collaboration: This learning style facilitates social interaction and peer collaboration, enhancing your learning experience.

  • Structure: Because you advance through the course together, you keep each other accountable and motivated.

  • Perspective: You’ll be exposed to new careers, opinions, experiences, and ideas as you engage with your cohort members.

  • Convenience: Study when it suits your schedule.

  • Flexibility: Spend as much time as you need with the course material or move through it quickly.

  • Low Pressure: There are no firm deadlines, so the course does not have to affect your availability.
